When referring to “result”, you may be considering the word结果(jiéguǒ). In chinese language, 结果(jiéguǒ) is a frequently used word or phrase in everyday life. It is a wide and basic thought that can be referred to as results. Regardless of what your actions lead to, it can be described as结果(jiéguǒ). Also结果(jiéguǒ) can also be referred to as result in mathematical calculations. For example, 结果(jiéguǒ) of 1 + 1 is 2. Consequently, 结果(jiéguǒ) is a term without emotional tendency. However, the word后果(hòuguǒ) described negative result or outcome.

后果(hòuguǒ) is constantly used to express some undesirable or harmful result or outcome, or consequence. For example damages caused as a result of fighting between two or more people, Here we can say造成不良后果(zàochéng bùliáng hòuguǒ). So when using后果(hòuguǒ), it is advisable for you to analyze and figure out if this word is properly used in that circumstance.

In learning Chinese, I normally emphasize the importance of context analysis, because it plays an important part in choosing appropriate terms.

Apart from结果(jiéguǒ) and后果(hòuguǒ), there is another word成果(chéngguǒ) that also expresses “result”. Opposing to后果(hòuguǒ), it refers to achievements or reward. 成果(chéngguǒ) is used to describe the success an individual achieves after making a great contribution or efforts. For instance, your sports team is the winner of a competition, you can say this is the成果(chéngguǒ) of all your efforts.

Above are the different expressions in several circumstances relating to “result”. Obviously, Chinese phrases all have their characteristics and specific functions, even though some appear to be similar.
